The Avenger B01 Chrono 44 Night Mission US Navy Trio is a set of three watches inspired by the United States Naval Academy and the two squadrons – VX-30 “Bloodhound” Weapons Test Squadron and VX-31 “Sandstorm” – that together make up the Pacific Naval Test Wing.

The Avenger collection began in 2001 and has seen many different models over the years, from time and date astronomical clocks to chronographs to GMT models, dive watches (Avenger Seawolf), and models using Breitling's SuperQuartz movement. Georges Kern relaunched the Avenger collection in 2023 and has significantly streamlined the number of watches while reducing the maximum size; Avenger watches are now available in 42mm or 44mm (previously Avenger watches could be as large as 48mm), and the collection still includes GMT and time and date models, as well as a chronograph running Breitling's in-house 01 vertical-clutch automatic chronograph.replica Breitling Avenger watches


If you know the history of the US Navy, it won't be hard to figure out which of the three was inspired by the US Naval Academy. There are several possible paths to becoming a naval aviator, but the USNA seems to be the preferred one (with very few exceptions, naval aviators are officers), and USN pilots have many options, including fixed-wing aircraft (fighter/attack aircraft, helicopters, anti-submarine aircraft, etc.). The colors of the US Navy are blue and gold, and they have been there for a long time - Secretary of the Navy Robert Smith issued an order for blue and gold uniforms in 1802, and these colors have long been part of the Navy's tradition; the Blue Angels aerobatic team flies blue and gold F-18s (to name just one example).

The Dust Devils are a behind-the-scenes squadron, but their mission is vital; in a 2018 interview, then-commander Elizabeth Somerville described the squadron's mission: “Generally speaking, what we do is software updates and integration testing of new weapons and armaments,” she explained. Like the Dust Devils, the Bloodhounds are a test squadron; the Navy says, "VX-30 was established in May 1995 as a weapons test squadron whose mission is to provide research, development, test, and evaluation of manned and unmanned fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft and weapon systems." VX-30 has a very unique unit emblem—it depicts the three-headed dog Cerberus, who in ancient Greek mythology was said to guard the entrance to the underworld (the dog appears in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone; Hagrid says he "bought him from a Greek lad in a bar"). The VX-30 logo was designed by Ralph Abel, Navy technical illustrator for VX-9 ("Vampires"), apparently at the request of Maj. Mark Thomas, VX-30's maintenance officer. All three watches feature 44mm x 15.2mm black ceramic cases (the “night mission” part of the design), are water-resistant to 300 meters, and feature unidirectional dive bezels; the bezel knight indicator is integrated directly into the bezel itself (hopefully any naval pilot wearing these watches will only test their water resistance during recreational water activities).

The Avenger watches have always been positioned as one of Breitling's most special aviation collections, and the Night Mission Trio's large size, rugged modern Breitling 01 movement, and high-visibility design put them squarely in that tradition—with two baseball squadrons adding extra street (runway? flight deck?) cred to the action.
